The yellow and red card

Did you know that yellow and red cards were not always implemented to warn players or to throw them off the pitch? Actually the idea of using cards was first used in the 1970 World Cup Finals in Mexico!

The idea behind using red and yellow cards to indicate dismissals and bookings was that of Englishman Ken Aston. Having previously refereed at the highest level he was in charge of referees at the 1966 World Cup finals in England. The infamous sending off of Antonio Rattin in the quarter-final between Argentina and England, when Aston to go on the field to remonstrate with the player to leave the pitch, made him think that their had to be a better system of allowing a referee to make his intentions clearer to a player who might not speak the same language. As he drove away from the stadium the solution came to him - "As I drove down Kensington High Street, the traffic light turned red. I thought, 'Yellow, take it easy; red, stop, you're off'."

The idea behind red card and yellow cards was to allow both players and fans to clearly understand when players had been dismissed or booked.

The first player in the Premier Football League to see red was David Wagstaff, playing for Blackburn Rovers at Orient on Saturday October 2nd 1976. Later that afternoon George Best, playing for Fulham at Southampton, was also red-carded.

Most Thrilling matches for Champions League these two days

Real Madrid - Manchester City 3-2

Chelsea - Juventus 2-2

Congratulations to the teams of Real Madrid-Manchester City and Juventus-Chelsea for having the most thrilling matches for the first games of Champions league group stage.

Real Madrid has been found losing twice in the match by Manchester City, but the Spanish team has managed to even the match twice but also to win with the (lucky) goal of Christiano Ronaldo. On the other match, the great juventus, despite losing by 2-0, managed to draw the match against Chelsea. Both matches were really worth watching!

Champions League Night

As you probably already know, this blog's subject in general is .... well, all about football. So, as the football lovers we are we cannot stay away from the fact that tonight UEFA Champions league Final stage has began for this season.

Today's matches are   (CEST time zone) :

Group A:                                                         Group B:
Dinamo Zagreb - Porto (20.45)                       Montpellier - Arsenal  (20.45)
Paris Saint German - Dinamo Kyiv (20.45)      Olympiacos - Schalke (20.45)

Group C:                                                        Group D:
Malaga - Zenit (20.45)                                    Dortmund - Ajax (20.45)
Milan - Anderlecht (20.45)                              Real Madrid - Manchester City (20.45)

In an effort to make some predictions regarding the matches above, we expect an easy win for PSG and a more tricky one for Porto in group A. Group B looks like the most balanced Group of the four and it is hard to say whether Arsenal will show the healthy, supersonic playstyle or if Schalke will have a difficult night against the experienced in Champions league rounds team, Olympiacos. Also, a balanced match for malaga and Zenit and a smooth and easy night for Milan, since the Italian team is thought to be a favorite for this match. As for Group D, I believe that it will be the most popular, most spectacular among the rest of the groups. Dortmund and Ajax, Real madrit and Manchester City, all upper level teams guarantee a supreme level of spectacule for tonight.

So, let us hope for the best for tonight's games. have fun!

Kick off

Hello world!

Welcome to my blog, a blog focus on the field of sports and more precisely, the sport of Football. (And by Football we mean the European version of Football or Soccer in the US version)

Why Football? Football has been characterized as the ‘King of Sports’ all over the world. why is that? there is no easy answer. To answer this, first we must find a proper answer for the question: why we love football. Because it offers spectacle? Because it is simple to understand? Because it is easy to play? Because it promotes and relies on teamwork? All of the above? None of them?

For each and every one of us the answer is different to this question. So, in this blog we are here to express our opinion, share our impressions and aspects of football events, agree or disagree on different matters but -in the end- to pay our respect to this great sport.

…And the refereee blows for the kick off!
